The history and origin of TPE beauties

Are you considering renting a Real Doll from our shop? Or perhaps you own one of your own? In either case, you've probably wondered at some point where the modern sex doll actually comes from...

According to historians, the idea of a sex doll originated with a Roman poet named Ovid. In his story "Pygmalion," a Cypriot king and sculptor carved a statue of a beautiful woman named "Galatea," and she was so enchanting that he fell in love with her and begged the goddess Aphrodite to bring her to life so he could have sex with her.

Other historians report that Dutch sailors in the 17th century crafted female-like creatures out of rags and rope to amuse themselves on long voyages at sea. Therefore, in some areas, the term "Dutch woman" is still used to describe extravagant dolls.

Let's get a bit more modern: At the beginning of the 20th century, psychiatrist Ivan Bloch argued that real dolls were the true means of therapy for mental and physical illnesses. They were made of rubber and were only prescribed by doctors.

In 1950, the forerunner of the famous Barbie doll entered society. Made of latex, inflatable, and not even remotely comparable to today's sophisticated Real Dolls. Due to the lack of advertising and tolerance in public spaces, this sex doll sold like hot cakes in secret.

Ten years later, the first silicone doll was introduced in America. This heralded the first sexual revolution. No other material had ever been so close to human skin . However, the price made it very difficult to establish the market. Silicone dolls were only available "under the counter" in the red-light district. Due to the prudish attitudes of society at the time, lawmakers banned public advertising.

This led to a scandal in 1997. American radio host Howard Stern indulged in sex doll sex on his radio show. The doll was created by artist Matt McMullen and was very similar to the dolls we know today. After the act was over and Stern expressed his endless enthusiasm for the product and its performance, public outrage and sales figures for all dealers of such dolls skyrocketed.

The latest innovation of this century concerns the material. Sex dolls are no longer made of silicone, but of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). This plastic is also sometimes referred to as "elastoplasts." At room temperature, it feels soft , like real human skin. The increasing presence and tolerance of such products is enabling ever-improving developments. We at housedoll® are firmly convinced that our premium real dolls not only help with psychological or physical disabilities, but also make many hidden or secret fetishes a reality.

We are excited to see what the future holds for us .
